FIA Environmental Accreditation // Hockenheimring achieves highest FIA certificate for sustainability

The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg has received recognition for its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability in motorsport: In mid-September 2024, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) conferred the prestigious 3-star environmental certificate to the traditional race track. The certificate recognizes the Hockenheimring’s comprehensive commitment to environmental responsibility and the implementation of numerous measures for a more sustainable future of motorsport.

The FIA Environmental Accreditation Program is focused at helping motorsport and mobility stakeholders worldwide to measure and improve their environmental performance. By establishing a clear and consistent environmental management system, the program provides stakeholders with a three-grade level (1 to 3 stars) system to assess and accredit their activities.

Lights on Green – Our Race for Change
Hockenheim-Ring GmbH, the operating company of the Hockenheimring, impressed in the certification process with ten topics from “waste avoidance and recycling” to “environmentally and safety-relevant innovations”, which the company has developed in recent years under the motto “Lights on Green – Our Race for Change”. The concrete measures implemented at the race track include the use of photovoltaic systems, the installation of LED lighting on the entire premises, the use of modern sensor technology for energy monitoring and efficiency control of the buildings, complete control and self-restriction of noise emissions, the establishment of protection zones for species conservation, responsible material procurement, progressive waste and land management, the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles and charitable and social projects.

“This award confirms our commitment to environmental sustainability in major projects, but also in our day-to-day work. Our thanks go to the entire team, which supports all processes and implements the concept of sustainability with conviction. As one of the most famous racetracks in the world, we want to be among the pioneers of future-proof motorsport,” explains Jochen Nerpel, Managing Director of Hockenheim-Ring GmbH. The Hockenheimring belongs to an exclusive group of race tracks and motorsport organizations that have received the highest environmental certificate from the FIA. Achieving 3-star status is an important milestone and is seen by those responsible at the circuit as an incentive to further intensify sustainability efforts and set new standards for environmentally conscious motorsport. “We are in a dynamic process that requires constant adaptation and innovation. That is why our ‘Lights on Green’ project is intended to become a living space for new ideas, initiatives, concepts and partnerships,” explains Ring Managing Director Jorn Teske.
